Swiss support over an eight‑year period has made a substantial contribution to reducing premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases in Kyrgyzstan by nearly one third.
Between 2018 and 2026, the Swiss project supported a significant decline in the overall burden of noncommunicable diseases. Disability‑adjusted life years, which quantify years lost to premature mortality and disability, declined by an average of 29%. Nationwide, more than 92,000 premature deaths were prevented, resulting in an estimated 44.8 billion som in avoided economic losses.
The project also helped reduce key risk factors for noncommunicable diseases. In the target areas of the II phase of the project, smoking rates fell by 19%, alcohol consumption by 58%, and indicators related to healthy nutrition and physical activity improved. These trends confirm that the project’s interventions successfully changed key risk behaviors.
To strengthen primary healthcare, the project supported the development and revision of clinical protocols, standards, and patient education materials now used by family doctors and nurses nationwide. Quality management departments were established within healthcare organizations, and budget‑transparency mechanisms were introduced to engage physicians in financial planning.
The project also expanded access to preventive services through nationwide health campaigns. In 2026, more than 1.1 million men participated in the “Be Responsible!” campaign, while over 1 million women took part in the “Women’s Health” campaign in 2025.
For information: Noncommunicable diseases are chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes. Major preventable risk factors include unhealthy diet, tobacco use, harmful alcohol consumption, and insufficient physical activity.
The Swiss‑funded project “Effective Management and Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases in Kyrgyzstan” has improved the health and well‑being of the population by expanding equitable access to quality primary healthcare services and promoting healthier lifestyles. Since 2018, the project has been implemented across the regions of Chui, Naryn, Talas, Issyk‑Kul, Osh, Jalal‑Abad, and Batken, as well as in the cities of Bishkek and Osh.
