Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is a treaty-based international, inter-governmental organization dedicated to supporting and promoting strong, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth in developing countries and emerging economies. It was founded in 2012 at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. GGGI supports its Member States in transitioning their economies toward a green growth model that simultaneously achieves poverty reduction, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. With 49 Member States and over 24 Partner countries and regional integration organizations in the process of accession, GGGI delivers programs and projects in over 51 countries. These initiatives encompass developing innovative green growth solutions, technical support, capacity building, policy planning & implementation, and assistance in building a pipeline of bankable green investment projects, project financing, investments, and knowledge sharing. GGGI’s work contributes to its Member States’ efforts to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals and the Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement.

GGGI Kyrgyzstan

GGGI officially opened its country office in the Kyrgyz Republic in June 2024, following the ratification of the Host Country Agreement in March 2024. This milestone also marked the launch of its first project, titled “Strengthening Climate Resilience through Flood and Drought Management in Central Asia,” which is funded by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea with a contribution of USD 10 million. The project will be implemented in both the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uzbekistan, specifically in the Talas-Alatau and Ferghana mountain ranges. Its goal is to enhance the climate and disaster resilience of vulnerable communities by integrating effective water resource and flood management strategies. The initiative will pilot innovative early warning systems, alongside advanced flood management, smart water pumping, and water gate systems.
GGGI President & Chair, Ban Ki-moon, remarked, "The opening of this Country Office represents a significant step forward in the shared commitment between GGGI and the Kyrgyz Government to jointly develop and implement sustainable green growth strategies. As you know, achieving sustainable development is a marathon, not a sprint—it requires sustained dedication, innovation, and, above all, collaboration."
Looking ahead, GGGI will continue to support the Kyrgyz Republic's green growth initiatives, which will include the development of a Country Planning Framework and the launch of additional green projects in other sectors. These efforts will help pave the way for a sustainable future in the Kyrgyz Republic.
