Over 760,000 women visited primary healthcare facilities during the Republican “Female Health” campaign

Published: 21 November 2024 г.

In October, over 760,000 women nationwide received preventive health check-ups as part of the Republican "Female Health" campaign. This accounts for 50% of the registered female population in local health facilities in the country.

The October campaign was led by the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic and supported by the Swiss project "Effective Management and Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases in Kyrgyzstan".

As a result, approximately 45,000 women were newly identified with high blood pressure; 10,000 were found to be at high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, and over 5,600 were discovered to be at elevated risk for diabetes. 300 women with suspected cases of breast cancer and 550 flagged for possible cervical cancer were referred to the tertiary level of the health care system.

In October 2023, preventive screenings at primary healthcare centers had reached over 430,000 women. More than 33,000 women visited health organizations for follow-up visits, and 1,400 were diagnosed with hypertension. The women newly identified with noncommunicable disease risk factors highlight the vital role of health screenings in the early detection and management of serious medical conditions, emphasizing the need for ongoing health awareness initiatives.

Noncommunicable diseases, such as cardiovascular conditions, cancer, diabetes, and chronic lung diseases, are leading causes of death both in Kyrgyzstan and worldwide. Key contributors to these diseases include unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, alcohol use, and smoking.

The Swiss project “Effective Management and Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases in Kyrgyzstan”, financed by the Swiss Government, helps to improve the health and well-being of the Kyrgyz population through equitable access to quality primary care services and the promotion of healthier lifestyles. The project first covered Chui, Naryn, Talas, and Issyk-Kul regions, and now it covers Osh, Jalal-Abad, and Batken regions, as well as Bishkek and Osh cities.
