Second Local Professional Development Workshop for Consortium University Professors: Developing 3rd Nonprofit Management (NPM) Course Syllabus on “Financial Management in NPM”
On February 27-28, 2015, USAID Collaborative Governance Program (CGP) Chief of Party, Mark Grubb, made opening remarks at the2nd Local Professional Development Workshop (LPDW) for twenty four professors and faculty members, representing 9 Kyrgyzstani Consortium Universities and highlighted the dedication, enthusiasm, and creativity of the participants in an effort to introduce NPM courses in the Kyrgyzstani Universities. The 2nd LPDW is aimed to support and develop the local capacity in advancing NPM education in Kyrgyzstani Universities.
The professors joined the 2nd LPDW to develop the 3rd course syllabus on “Financial Management in Nonprofit Organizations.” Professor of the Business and Management Department, Finance and Credit Sub-Department at Osh State University, Baktygul Maksytova, facilitated the LPDW. During the two-day workshop, professor Baktygul Maksytova from the Osh State University, Chynara Ashimova Arabaev Kyrgyz State University, Dooronbek Sattarkulov from Batken State University, Salmoorbek Umetov from Jalal-Abad State University, and Altynbek Arymbaev from Issyk-Kul State University presented the following topics related to Financial Management in Nonprofits: Basic Concepts or Foundations of Financial Management, Financial System and Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic, The Notion of “Financial Management,” Specifics of Financial Management in Nonprofit and Commercial Organizations, Taxation of Nonprofits, Financial Mechanisms in Nonprofits, Financial Resources and Incomes in Nonprofits, Reorganization and Liquidation of Nonprofits, Financial Control and Specifics of Financial Reporting in Nonprofits, Optimization of Financial Management in Nonprofits.
CGP Higher Education Officer, Gulshat Maatkerimova, shared the results of her research visit to the Republic of Georgia to design the 2nd NPM Fellowship Program for professors from the Consortium of Universities on NPM. CGP Fellowship Program provides university professors with the opportunity to participate in the CGP NPM Fellowship Program in April-May aimed to strengthen their capacity and enable them to expand their knowledge of the nonprofit sector and nonprofit management in a way that will enhance their ability to teach this complex subject.
The participants used effectively the two-day workshop and planned next steps to finalize the syllabus, developed a work plan and unanimously decided to develop two versions of the syllabus on “Financial Management in Nonprofit Organizations” – one for students at Finance and Economics Departments, and another for students of other departments. The participants also discussed the results of the 1st survey on Introduction to NPM course launched in September 2014 and agreed to improve the NPM courses according to the recommendations and feedback the survey provided.
