Naryn, Kyrgyz Republic, 26 March 2015 – “I am delighted to see the impressive progress made on the construction of the Naryn Campus of the University of Central Asia (UCA) in nine months. The buildings are of the highest quality using international standard materials and I am looking forward to its launch next year,” noted Elvira Sarieva, Minister of Education and Science, during a visit to the campus site on March 26, 2015.
“We are most encouraged by the visit of Minister Sarieva to witness for herself the pace of construction and to learn about the quality of UCA, which will admit its first undergraduate students in September 2016,” remarked Mr Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, the AKDN Diplomatic Representative for the Kyrgyz Republic, who also serves as Executive Chairman of UCA’s Board Executive Committee.
The Naryn Governor, Mr Amanbai Kaiypov, and Mayor of Naryn, Mr Rakhat Adiyev, also accompanied the Minister.
“The University of Central Asia has already had an impact on the economy and communities of Naryn. Some 450 workers, half of them from Naryn, have been employed on the construction site and have made a positive contribution to the economy of the Oblast,” observed Mr Kaiypov.
“With the launch of UCA's first academic enrichment camp this summer in Issyk-Kul, we are already engaging students in Central Asia to ensure they are informed of the opportunities UCA will offer,” remarked Mr Kassim-Lakha. “The camp is designed to enhance the English language and math skills of 75 Grade 10 students from Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic and Kazakhstan. It will prepare them for international-quality University education by developing their analytical and critical-thinking skills.”
The University’s five-year undergraduate programme will include preparatory, core and prerequisite courses, as well as the choice of six specialisations or majors. Each of the three campuses will offer two majors: Computer Science and Communications and Media in Naryn; Economics and Earth and Environmental Sciences in Khorog; and Business and Management and Engineering Sciences in Tekeli. Students will also study for a minor in Central Asian Studies, Development Studies or Globalisation Studies.
The Minister and her delegation also visited UCA’s School of Professional and Continuing Education in Naryn town which, since 2006, has reached over 19,000 learners in the Kyrgyz Republic and 74,000 learners in the region.
