The Representative Office of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) in Kyrgyzstan organized a two-day training on "International standards of journalism: coverage of human rights issues" for journalists from Batken, Jalal-Abad and Osh oblasts.
This training was held in the framework of the project "Creating a culture of investigative journalism to promote democratic reform: linking human rights organizations, public institutions and the media", funded by the European Union and the Government of Norway.
During the training, journalists learned how to develop materials on human rights topics, respecting international standards of journalism; what is a violation of citizens' rights and how to cover conflict situations affected by human rights violations, while respecting the principles of objectivity, impartiality and balanced approach while working on the materials.
In addition, the trainers explained the structure of the mechanism of protection of human rights at the national and international levels, how to find out and understand the violations in these processes; how to choose a theme and focus of the material when covering such cases.
At the workshops, journalists were applied theoretical knowledge in practice, as they worked on the coverage of problems of the city of Osh.
Regional reporters noted the relevance and necessity of such professional training.
"I liked the training for its richness and practical orientation”, said a correspondent of ORTRC "Yntymak" Madina Ulukbek kyzy. “We did not just listen and perform text work, but we also discussed and determined the relevance of human rights issues on which we then worked closely. I will use these approaches in my work and will pay more attention to the topic of human rights, because in addition to its relevance, this area is given little time, and you can find a lot of interesting topics there"
Besides journalists, representatives of the press services of state administrations also attended this training.
The training was attended by 17 journalists from Osh, Batken and Jalal-Abad regions. They were representatives of such media as: ORTRK "Yntymak", south bureau of TRC "NTS", IA AKIpress news agency, the Association of Community Media and the newspapers of "Batken tany", "Jalal-Abad ?n?", portal oshnews.kg, the press service of the City Hall in Osh and others.
