Published: 10 June 2015 г.
The European Union Delegation issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission to the Kyrgyz Republic.

The EU Delegation joins the people of the Kyrgyz Republic in commemorating the violent inter-ethnic clashes which occurred in Southern Kyrgyzstan in June 2010 and led to the tragic loss of life, and to hundreds of thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons.

In response to those events, the EU provided urgent humanitarian aid, and supported the efforts aimed at reconstruction and rebuilding peace and democracy through achieving national reconciliation. The EU assisted in the development of a new constitutional framework that enshrines the rule of law and democratic governance as fundamental principles. The EU commends the democratic gains made since 2010 and the commitment of the people of Kyrgyzstan to democracy, which have showcased the Kyrgyz Republic as a model for transition to democracy. The EU reiterates its readiness to assist further democratic consolidation through support to electoral reform and to free and fair elections.

The European Union, drawing on its own historical experience, strongly believes that governance based on tolerance, respect for human rights and the inclusion of all ethnic groups in political life is the basis for a solid and stable democratic society that is able to make the best use of the full potential of its human and material resources for the prosperous development of the country.

The European Union re-confirms its strong interest in a peaceful, democratic and prosperous Kyrgyzstan, where all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, and reiterates its commitment to support this development.
