Peer-to-peer Consultants to Fight Discrimination against HIV-Positive People

Published: 24 June 2016 г.
Karakol – On June 23 public union Harmony Plus will train 10 people living with HIV (PLHIV) to be peer-to-peer consultants to other PLHIV. Peer-to-peer consultants will strengthen the PLHIV community by using their personal experience and training to support PLHIV in similar situations. The training is supported by USAID and DFID.

After undergoing training from Harmony Plus, the peer-to-peer consultants will be able to support PLHIV and act as conflict mediators while maintain confidentiality. These consultants will attract people to special self-help groups and help those groups find creative solutions in difficult situations.

The training is a part of a project –“Family-oriented Approach as the Basis of Social and Psychological Support to PLHIV and their Families,” that aims to mobilize and strengthen the PLHIV community. The Issyk-Kul Oblast Center of Prevention and Control of AIDs provides advice to support the training of the peer-to-peer consultants.

The consultants and self-help groups will fight the stigma and discrimination against HIV positive-people by providing moral support to PLHIV to help them accept their diagnosis, fight for their wellbeing and continue to be socially active.

The project is supported by the Collaborative Governance Program (CGP), which promotes effective collaboration among civil society, the private sector, and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, and the private sector of the Kyrgyz Republic. The Program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), and is implemented by East-West Management Institute (EWMI).
