National WaSH Review conducted for the first time in Kyrgyzstan

In mid-August, an extended meeting of the Coordination Commission in the sphere of drinking water supply, sewerage and sanitation services in the Kyrgyz Republic was held in Bishkek.

In his welcome speech, the First Vice Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic and Chairman of the Coordination Commission, M.D. Abulgaziev stressed the priority of water supply for the country’s development. For example, the government expenditure on water supply and sewerage doubled in 2017 comparing with the last year; it makes up around 200 mln soms now.

The Government of the Kyrgyz Republic manages not only implementation of infrastructure projects but focuses on improvement of policies and regulatory system in sphere of drinking water supply, sanitation and sewerage. One of the results of these activities is the National WaSH Review. The Review is prepared under UNDP GoAL WaSH project in cooperation with the government agencies, NGO and private sector. The Director of the Department of Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation, A.S. Toktoshev, says the country carries out for the first time the analysis of all aspects of drinking water supply, including gender and rural management models, which contains recommendations to be implemented in the future.  Alongside with the Review the country prepared for the first time the Wash Reference Book.

Participants of the meeting discussed fund-raising in drinking water and sewerage. They prized the Commission as a good example of joint efforts in investment climate improvement in drinking water supply.

Recall, the Coordination Commission was established in 2014 under UNDP support. It comprises the Government Office of the Kyrgyz Republic, key ministries and departments of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Community Development and Investment Agency, donors and international organizations such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the World Bank, UNICEF and UNDP.
