Bishkek – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in the Kyrgyz Republic welcomes the generous contribution of USD 473,000 from the Government of Switzerland to improve the well-being of people living in the targeted Social Inpatient Institutions (SII) across the country and build their resilience against health shocks.
WFP will use the funds to support up to 1,200 residents, which include persons living with disabilities and the elderly of 6 SIIs to guarantee that no one is left behind, including the most disadvantaged people who live in closed institutions.
Thanks to the Swiss contribution, WFP will create better living conditions in terms of access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and improve the infrastructure of kitchen facilities. In addition, WFP will provide capacity strengthening activities for cooks and administration of the targeted Institutions on enhancing meal preparation and basic nutritional knowledge by considering the gender and multiple forms of disabilities of the residents. Such assistance will ensure residents have access to proper WASH facilities, balanced and nutritious meals, while giving the SII staff the opportunity to prioritize available resources to develop diverse menus.
The project will be implemented in close coordination with the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration, both at the central and district levels.
WFP, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, is the United Nations (UN) agency leading the critical sectors of food security and nutrition. In this role, WFP has supported emergency food distributions, asset creation and human capital building through cash incentives to the most vulnerable people across the country to cover their immediate food needs and support early recovery.
