Summary of Position:
The Assistant Manager of Student Affairs (AMSA) will be responsible for collaborating with the Senior Manager of Student Affairs in creating and implementing the overall vision for UCA’s student services student life, residential life, student activities, health, and psychological services.
Moreover, he/she will be responsible for developing and overseeing programs that enable students to realize their fullest intellectual and personal potential on campus and for integrating student life experiences with the UCA’s educational mission. The AMSA will enthusiastically partner with faculty and staff colleagues to further enrich the connections between the curriculum, co-curricular programming, and residential life. This individual will maximize the talents of the Student Life Staff on the campus and create opportunities that fulfill the strengths of each of the SLT members. Together they will create a vibrant and engaging campus community that is inclusive, respectful, and safe for all its members. The Assistant Manager will monitor campus operations related to student life provide appropriate feedback to responsible parties and be able to step into the Campus Management Team when the Senior Manager of Student Affairs (SMSA) is unable to be present.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Student Activities:
- Oversee management of all student activities and involvement programs on the campus, including but not limited to sustaining and expanding the student association (UCASA), create enriching student life programming including but not limited to: sports, music, and community service;
- Liaise with APA to ensure that the student programming is published on official social media channels as well as the Student Life social media channels;
- Oversee management of leadership education programs;
- Co-direct first-year orientation programs with the Associate Dean.
Residential Life:
- Oversee management of all residence life functions, including but not limited to: residence-based programming, hiring, training, and supervising Student Life Advisors (SLA) on the Khorog/Naryn Campus;
Stakeholders Involvement:
- Work with the Senior Manager of Student Affairs, student life staff, student groups, and other members of the University community in developing extracurricular programming for the Khorog/Naryn Campus, assuring integration with the academic life of the institution and encouraging student personal growth and development;
- Collaborate with faculty and administrative staff to realize key student learning outcomes around life skills development, understanding democracy and civic engagement, and leadership education;
- Coordinate with campus constituencies and community leaders in developing and managing co-curricular learning and service opportunities;
- Coordinates external events that require student participation (e.g. Open House, Convocation).
Code of Conduct:
- Assist the Senior Manager of Student Affairs in establishing and operationalizing UCA’s Code of Conduct;
- Assist in resolving disputes and complaints of students and parents;
- Work closely with the Campus Security in addressing student security;
- Establish and administer the policies and regulations of the University as they pertain to students on the Khorog/Naryn Campus, including internal University judicial and disciplinary procedures;
- Playing the role of a campus-wide ombudsperson;
- Working with the SMSA to solve larger disciplinary issues.
Health: Work closely with the campus doctor and facilities manager in coordinating medical and health services and insurance for students.
Relationships:
- Student Life Advisors will receive direct supervision on daily tasks from the AMSA, while the AMSA’s would receive direct supervision and guidance from the SMSA;
- The Assistant Manager of Student Affairs reports to the Senior Manager of Student Affairs and consults with the Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) when dealing with campus-specific issues;
- Reporting lines are subject to change.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- A bachelor’s degree is required;
- Experience in University administration, student affairs/life, counseling, college teaching, or other comparable experience;
- A strong record of achievements in such areas as conflict resolution, residential and housing services, and quality co-curricular programming;
- A sophisticated understanding of how to gather, analyze, and use data to develop and assess programs;
- Comprehensive knowledge of the issues and opportunities of a private residential University, a commitment to furthering a high level of cooperation between student affairs and academics;
- A demonstrated commitment to serving students with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals, and abilities;
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity in all its forms, including a track record of individual action and institutional leadership;
- A demonstrated sensitivity, imagination, and effectiveness in responding to challenging student and University community issues;
- Superb written communication skills, and the ability to speak persuasively to a variety of audiences, including students, parents, faculty, donors, and staff;
- A consultative, collegial style and the ability to inspire trust in others;
- A high degree of accessibility and openness to students.
Language: Advanced English is required.
